Top Trending College Football Teams

When you look at college football from a year to year basis, it has the potential to get tricky. There is a lot of turnover at key positions and new faces that are unproven. Whereas the players in the NFL have a longer statistical memory, college football is flushed with new faces and turnover at key positions.

Looking ahead at the 2009 season, we have done an analysis on the teams that brought us the highest returns last year and determine if our clients can use past performance to create an advantage for the upcoming season.

The reason we included “GAME WINNER” in this table is because in many cases, we are not dealing with teams that were overwhelming favorites (except Ohio State and Oklahoma State). These are teams that currently live in the middle of the road, but played very close to the AccuScore simulations straight up and against the spread.

UNLV Rebels

Overview:
We are very excited about the 2009 UNLV season, with the Rebels returning seven starters on both offense and defense. You have a new non-conference schedule with UNLV so I suggest waiting for their conference schedule to kick in before playing their point spreads.

Advice:
The UNLV conference schedule is identical to last year and the Rebels should not get a lot of respect coming off a 5-7 season. Our advice is to pay attention to UNLV in their first three games of the year and then look for the big gap between the AccuScore simulation and the Vegas line once conference play starts because you will find tremendous value.

Miami Hurricanes

Overview:
For a team who had such a strong 2007 recruiting class, the start of the 2009 season looks like a disaster waiting to happen. AccuScore’s early projections show the Hurricanes are a strong candidate to go 0-4, but we are not sure the odds makers are going to be quick to catch on.

Advice:
Any time a team returns eight starters on offense and seven on defense, we are excited. Combine that with our 83% ML accuracy and 82% ATS accuracy and we are very encouraged about the potential of our picks in Miami games. Unlike UNLV, we suggest jumping with both feet with Miami games being that their first four games are against teams that return a lot of starters (with statistical track records) as well.

Arizona State

Overview:
Arizona State is not a team that I would invest time in early in the season. They are a mediocre team that will play a lot of mediocre teams in the Pac 10. We are interested to see how they do in replacing Rudy Carpenter and if they can get sustainable play from the running back position.

Advice:
With only 13 starters back in 2009, we advise you to wait to see how Arizona State matches up with the projections. If numbers trend successfully, we suggest waiting until mid-October before getting involved with any sort of action with the Sun Devils. An important barometer is measuring their projected stats vs. actual stats when they travel to Georgia on September 26.

Ohio State Buckeyes

Overview:
Ohio State is a team that we expect to do very well with in 2009. I am not sure how much better you can do than 12-0 straight up, but we believe the Buckeyes will repeats as a very profitable team this year. We are concerned that they replace Robiske and Hartline at wide receiver, but those two bailed out Terrell Prior more than anything. Because Ohio State is not a precision passing team, we think the younger receiving core will allow Ohio State to play even closer to their projections this season

Advice:
The game everyone wants to talk about is USC coming to Columbus. This is a game where the number will be very important. From a strategic point perspective, the advantage is to Ohio State. Ohio State also has fewer variables to worry about, whereas USC will be playing a new quarterback and have eight new faces on defense. Although Ohio State only returns five starters on offense, their running game will be more effective with Dan Herron and Prior and Ohio State is the best team in the conference.

Washington Huskies

Overview:
Washington will improve under Steve Sarkisian and that is all they can do after their 2008 season. However, we noticed that Washington gets an abnormal amount of respect with the odds makers in Vegas, thus presenting good financial opportunities for the player. Our computer were quick to realize Washington would not be good. The only games we picked them to win last year were at home vs. Stanford and against Washington State.

Advice:
Last year’s respect on the Vegas line seems to be already showing itself for this season when the Huskies host LSU. Despite being in a hard to reach area of the country, Washington had no home field advantage and gave up a minimum of four touchdowns to each talented program who played in Seattle. LSU is only a 17 point favorite on the road (up 3 points from the opening line) and AccuScore has LSU by 21 in this game. Additionally, should USC lose to Ohio State, you might also get a friendly price when the Huskies host the Trojans on September 19th. Washington returns 18 starters and we see nothing to indicate that we will not duplicate our 2008 record in picks where Washington plays.

Oklahoma State

Overview:
Oklahoma State will be in the top ten throughout the entire year and we feel they will be this year’s Texas Tech. The Cowboys return every member of one of the nation’s most potent offenses with a coach dedicated to making it work again. Despite this being “their” year, AccuScore had the 2008 team pegged with 83% accuracy straight up and 67% against the spread.

Advice:
The Cowboys schedule sets up great for their run, and for the player to get great value. OSU is only a 5.5 point favorite when they open their season at home against a terribly overrated Georgia team. AccuScore feels this line is off by seven points and the Cowboys should be able to flex their muscle with a double digit win against a traditional SEC power. If OSU does beat Georgia, the odd makers should come back with a big overlay in points when host Houston the following week. Houston can score points (37 last year against OSU) and should provide a good opportunity to take an awful lot of points. Additionally, OSU drew the week part of the Big 12 North and matches up against Missouri, Iowa State and Colorado. AccuScore was 29-6 straight up with those three teams in 2008 indicating that all three match-ups will be with teams who play close to our simulations.

NFL Player Props

I just got back from a weekend in Las Vegas and picked up the Player Propositions Sheet at the Venetian. I compared the betting line with AccuScore’s current season player projections (stats based on average of 10,000 season simulations) to see if there were any strong plays.

PASSING TOUCHDOWNS

The first key stat is Passing Touchdowns and there are number of strong Over plays.

QBACCUSCORE PICK: OVER
Tom Brady LINE: 27.5 ACC: 38It looks like Vegas expects Brady's injury from last season to take a severe toll with a line of just 29.5. This is a 20.5 drop from his 50 TD '07-08 Season. The key pieces of that record breaking offense are still in place and AccuScore expects Brady to soar of 30 TDs this season while still being well under his record-breaking pace.
Drew Brees LINE: 27.5 ACC: 32Brees has averaged over 29 passing TDs a season since joining the Saints. AccuScore expects him to come close to his 34 from last season with 32 in '09. The Vegas line is set at 27.5 probably because the Saints have a tougher schedule in 2009. However, as long as the offense still passes the ball over 580 times, Brees (and WR Marques Colston) stay healthy he should go over 27.5.
Kurt Warner LINE: 25.5 ACC: 34Clearly Vegas thinks Warner will get hurt and miss as many as 3 or 4 games. AccuScore's projection is for Warner to stay healthy and with Anquan Boldin in camp and seemingly ready to play the season with Arizona the Cardinals prolific passing game should reach the endzone at least 30+ times. This pick is 100% tied to Warner's ability to stay healthy.
Donovan McNabb LINE: 21.5 ACC: 26McNabb had 23 passing TDs in '09. He had 10 in his first 8 games (1.25 per game), but finished with 18 in his final 11 regular season and playoff games (1.64 average). His higher average was tied to the healthy return of WR Kevin Curtis and the emergence of TE Brent Celek. With a healthy set of receivers which includes rookie Jeremy Maclin, McNabb is set for a better season in 2009 and over 21.5 passing TDs.
Matt Hasselbeck LINE: 19.5 ACC: 23Hasselbeck is just 1 season removed from a 28 Pass TD season in 2007. If healthy, the Seahawks passing game should more closely resemble the 2007 sqaud than the injury plagued 2008 one. They added TJ Houshmandzadeh and Hasselbeck is healthy. The NFC West is still a relatively weak division and Hasselbeck should have over 20 TDs.
Ben Roethlisberger LINE: 19.0 ACC: 22Big Ben was considered a fantasy bust in 2008 with just 17 TDs (down from 32 the previous season), but considering how tough his schedule was 17 was very good. The Steelers go from having the toughest schedule to one of the easiest and Roethlisberger is slated to bounce back with a 20+ TD season.
Matt Ryan LINE: 17.5 ACC: 22The Falcons have a much tougher schedule in 2008 which could hurt their chances of returning to the playoffs, but it could actually help Matt Ryan produce more TDs because the Falcons may play more games from behind which relies on the passing game. They also have Tony Gonzalez to help Ryan pass for over 20 TDs in simulations.

NFL Football Future

My wife has a conference in Vegas and I decided to tag along to make a few Futures bets in the NFL and College Football. I don’t have the Vegas Casino lines in front of me so I’m going to rely on a set of online sportsbook lines to make picks.

TOO MUCH JUICE ON CONFERENCE AND SUPER BOWL WINNER BETS

The first thing I’m going to do is NOT bet on who will win the AFC or NFC. I translated the betting lines for each team into the % chance Vegas is giving each team to win the conference. If you add up the individual percentages you end up over 150 percent in each conference. If the Sportsbooks were offering fair odds the percentages would add up to maybe 115% or 120% at most. There is not a single good bet on the board when you consider these lines. The same thing goes on Super Bowl bets where the total % chance of all teams in the league is 163.1%.

MY DIVISION WINNER BETS

The Division Winner juice is acceptable. If you add up the % chance Vegas gives each team you get a shade over 120% which is reasonable. I took the percentages and adjusted them to add up to 100% (%Adj Column) and also took AccuScore’s % chance each team has of winning the division as of 8/1. Highlighted in yellow are 3 AFC teams with an Acc% that is actually higher than not only the %Adj, but also the overall %Chance with the vig.

One of the three picks I like is Baltimore. The Ravens are a little bit of a long-shot as Pittsburgh is favored to repeat by both Vegas odds-makers and AccuScore. However, with Derrick Mason un-retiring and Joe Flacco playing with one year of experience under his belt I agree with AccuScore simulations that Baltimore has around a 40% chance of winning the AFC North. The Baltimore bet is a long shot compared to the other 2 bets, but I like a 42% chance of making 180% ROI. If I were nearing retirement I would not risk my 401K on this, but a hundred bucks on my favorite team at nearly 2 to 1? I’ll take that.

WIN TOTALS

The analysis below is highly tentative because I don’t know what the juice is on the over/under. A bet like St. Louis under 5.0 may look good based on the -1.2 difference between AccuScore’s simulation average win total and the betting line, but what if you have to pay -135 on the under vs +130 on the over?

I identified the teams where the AccuScore simulation average win total was at least 0.5 points less than the betting line and highlighted a few teams that I personally like. I like the Under on Houston because they are in such a competitive division (Colts, Titans, Jaguars are one season removed from being in the AFC Championship game) and to lose the under bet they would need to win 9+ games. In AccuScore simulations they are only winning over 50% in 7 of their 16 games.

The 3 teams in the AFC are Baltimore, Indianapolis, and San Diego. I’ll go in reverse order in why I like these picks.

San Diego was horrendous last season and they still won the division. Denver lost Jay Cutler, Oakland and Kansas City both are years away from contending and San Diego returns a team that won a playoff game last season. If I bet on the Chargers I won’t make much money if the Chargers win, but even if I make a 12 to 18% profit depending on the lines offered in Vegas, it’s still a very good ROI over 5 months and will probably out-perform the stock market.

The Colts are also a smart bet. The Titans were the dominant team last season, but I think Kerry Collins got lucky. The Titans have a harder schedule in 2009 and they lost Albert Haynesworth via Free Agency. Even Vegas doesn’t like the Titans as they give a 13 win team just a 25% chance of repeating as the division winner. The Colts won their final 9 regular season games last year and I think they will one again repeat as division champs. I’ll also get close to doubling my money when the Colts repeat.

In the NFC there is a team in each division with an AccuScore % higher than the Vegas % Chance unadjusted. I personally agree with all 4 picks, but with the exception of Arizona I would not come close to betting the farm on any of them.

Arizona is paying off even money but AccuScore gives them a 67% chance of winning the NFC West. While I would prefer it if Anquan Boldin was definitely going to be on the team this year, I do not have faith in the 49ers, Seahawks or Rams. I am a bit surprise to see Vegas offering even money. In terms of the difference between Vegas’s % Chance and AccuScore’s % the Cardinals are the biggest “lock” of all highlighted teams.

I plan on putting money on Dallas, Green Bay and New Orleans, but not a lot. They all have around a 33 percent chance of winning their divisions and I will likely hit just one of these 3 bets and will probably end up not making any profit. However, there’s around a 20% chance I go 2-1 and make a nice profit. In terms of the amount of the bet. If my wife lets me bet $1,000 I would not put down more than $100 total on these 3 teams, but I will make the bets.

WIN TOTALS

The analysis below is highly tentative because I don’t know what the juice is on the over/under. A bet like St. Louis under 5.0 may look good based on the -1.2 difference between AccuScore’s simulation average win total and the betting line, but what if you have to pay -135 on the under vs +130 on the over?

In AccuScore simulations they are only winning over 50% in 7 of their 16 games.

I also like Carolina to win under 9, although a push is highly likely. Carolina had an incredibly soft schedule in 2008 in terms of the quality of opposing run defenses. This allowed DeAngelo Williams to have an insanely productive season and it hid a lot of Jake Delhomme’s deficiencies. This season the opposing run defenses are much better which will have a domino effect (fewer yards on first and second down rushes, more 3rd and long, fewer first downs, time of possession goes down, etc.). Plus, it’s the NFC South. The winner one year always seems to fall the next season.

The Jets will not get good QB play this season. Kellen Clemens is not a QB who will lead the team to 8 or more wins. Mark Sanchez is a southern California born, USC QB who probably never has played a meaningful game in bad weather in his entire life. How is he going to handle playing in the winds of the Meadowlands or on the road in Buffalo and New England. Sanchez’s one major weakness is questionable arm strength. That’s the worst weakness to have being a Jets QB.

There are fewer Over picks and I only feel comfortable making one of them myself. I’m a little nervous about making two picks on Green Bay (to win the NFC North and to win over 8.5 games). Last season every NFC North team benefited by playing Detroit twice, but Green Bay did out-score opponents by 39 points last season. Even if you take out the Detroit games, Green Bay was statistically an 8-8 team at worse, if you disregard the biggest statistics (win-loss record). For them to go over 8.5 they need to have a defense that is average. The Packers were universally praised for their draft which included two top-rated defensive players BJ Raji and Clay Matthews. If these two can help Green Bay move from the bottom 3rd defending the run up to an average run defense then I like Green Bay to win 9 or even 10 games.

So these are my picks as I head to Vegas. If I discover radically different betting lines in the sportsbooks I’ll revise these picks based on what I find. Wish me luck.
